ost people think they could identify an American Pit Bull Terrier (most commonly referred to as “Pit Bull”) if they had to. How hard could it be, right? You would be surprised. A few years ago, someone decided to put a little “Find the Pit Bull Game” gallery together, a set of photographs showing purebred dogs that are quite often misidentified as Pit Bulls so they could see for themselves just how likely the average Joe or Jane were of picking out the correct dog.

In 2007, I participated in the first National Pit Bull Awareness Day, an event organized by Jodi Preis and Bless The Bullys (see our featured page for more information). I decided to print out a few copies of the gallery and took them along with all the other educational materials I had prepared for my event table.

I turned it into a fundraising “opportunity.” Anyone interested in taking a stab at a guess could play for a $1 donation; applied towards veterinary care for rescue dogs. By the end of the day, we had raised quite a few bucks and if memory serves me correctly, only ONE of the several dozen people playing picked out the real “Pit Bull.”
